Baking is a fun pastime and serious skill for many, but, like any hobby, starting it can be a major challenge. For some people, these roadblocks can seriously deter them from baking at all.
One of the main reasons that starting baking is so inaccessible, is the cost. Many recipes call for unique equipment, or expensive ingredients. For example, this simple chocolate cake recipe by Tesco that requires multiple cake tins of a specific size, skewers, cooling racks, and pallete knives. If you're just starting out, many of these items that experienced bakers will take for granted may rack up quite the price! If you're on a low income, this could be too costly to justify for making just one or two cakes, meaning that baking as a casual hobby is not easily available unless you have the cash for it. Beyond that, there are also cake mixers, microwaves, scales, and many other pieces of equipment often expected in recipes. Its generally assumed that a baker would have access to all these things- often not even being listed in the equipment lists! However, for people on lower incomes this isn't always the case. These common assumptions in many baking resources alienate potential bakers who don't have big budgets.
